Connected and Sustainable Work
Connected Workplace – Optimizing city resources
Mobility has changed office workers’ habits and office space utilization. With the rise of the Internet and the mobile worker, dedicated offices and cubicle spaces are left empty, and meeting spaces and common areas are unused. In fact, often, up to 60 percent of office space is underutilized and remains vacant on a daily basis.
Using ICT, municipalities can transform traditional office space into dynamic workspaces which offer flexibility and personalization required to improve workspace use, as well as to enhance collaboration and interactions among the knowledge workers. ICT can enable services such as email, voicemail, conference calling, video conferencing, knowledge management, intranets, and instant messaging. In addition, dynamic space assignment (hot desk) allows a worker to make use of any available space, with all the associated services such as telephone, following the worker to the space. These services enable new work practices while reducing overall real estate requirements while providing flexible settings to tailor the working environment needs of the person or the task at hand: individual, group, social, private, etc.
