Amsterdam

Overview

Gemeente Amsterdam Amsterdam is one of the world's leading cities insofar ICT and innovation is concerned. The city hosts the largest internet exchange in the world and over 6000 ICT related companies have their headquarters in the greater Amsterdam area. Further, Amsterdam now receives global recognition for its cutting edge innovative policies and investments, allowing the city to be deployed with a comprehensive, next generation fiber to the home network.

Amsterdam's green credentials are no less substantial. The city's progressive policies on clean air and inner city traffic and parking serve as successful examples deserving replication in other cities around the world. In addition, the historic green attitudes of the Dutch at large (no other citizen in the world possesses more bikes than the average Dutch!) and the country's institutional awareness of the environment and water management in particular, serve as great illustration of a community being well aligned to the principles of sustainability.

The above arguments, combined with Amsterdam's belief in the need for, and powerful impact of public-private partnerships, provided the very basis for having Amsterdam co-found the Connected Urban Development program together with Cisco and the Cities of San Francisco and Seoul.

Green Strategy

The City of Amsterdam has formally endorsed its 'Climate Vision'. In 2025 the CO2 emission of the city will be 40% lower than in the reference year of 1990. In 2015 the municipal organization will be climate neutral. The council cannot achieve this alone and has appealed to citizens, workers and companies to help make the 2025 goal possible.
