Introducing Connected Urban Development
Connected Urban Development (CUD) demonstrates how to reduce carbon emissions by introducing fundamental improvements in the efficiency of the urban infrastructure through information and communications technology (ICT).
Connected Urban Development was born from Cisco’s commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative to participate in helping reduce carbon emissions. The CUD program initially involves three pilot cities: San Francisco, Amsterdam, and Seoul. These cities were selected because each had implemented or planned to implement a next-generation broadband (fiber and/or wireless) infrastructure; each suffers from significant traffic congestion issues; and each is led by a visionary mayor already involved in green initiatives. Cisco’s Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG) manages the CUD program, supporting each city’s efforts to create a more sustainable future through ICT.
In 2008 four new cities have joined the program – Birmingham, Hamburg, Lisbon, and Madrid – beginning a new phase for CUD and opening new avenues for collaboration in promoting smart urban environments globally.
Learnings from the CUD partnership will serve as a blueprint of best practices and methodologies that other cities can use as a reference. The scope of the program will transcend the environmental dimension, delivering innovative, sustainable models for urban planning and economic development.
The following diagram outlines the key areas of focus for the program:

Connected Urban Development Conference, San Francisco, February 20th- 21st, 2008
From the global leadership vision of the Clinton Foundation to a live demonstration of a green, Connected Bus, the inaugural Connected Urban Development conference captured the breadth of thinking and actions that the CUD program represents. Over two days delegates heard about visions and aspirations as well as the practical implementations necessary for a more sustainable future for cities.
This included breakout sessions on:
• Green ICT in San Francisco
• Smart Transportation in Seoul
• Working in 21st century Amsterdam
Global thought leaders from government, business, and academia addressed themes of:
• Connected and Sustainable Cities
• Connected and Sustainable Energy
• Connected and Sustainable Mobility
• Connected and Sustainable Work
In addition, leaders from the three founding CUD member cities and Cisco welcomed four new cities into the program – Birmingham, Hamburg, Lisbon, and Madrid – beginning a new phase for CUD and opening new avenues for collaboration in promoting smart urban environments globally.
The presentations and videos of the conference sessions can be found on this site. Do return regularly, as program updates, research, and CUD community discussions will be developed and posted on an ongoing basis.
